Lil Wayne – cover face of this months Rolling Stone

February 4, 2010

Everyone seems to be having a hissy fit about this shoot – with him apparently doing ‘blood’ signs as well as brandishing a red bandana. Now I don’t know much about the whole bloods/crips situation and quite frankly I don’t give  damn, but I have been told that this is an old picture. I think someone was trying to stitch Weezy up here.

Here’s a snippet from the interview:

“I don’t like to stop,” Wayne tells RS‘ Chris Norris. “I believe you stop when you die.” So in the weeks before he reports to Rikers Island, Wayne is keeping busy — recording tracks bound for Tha Carter IV (the album Cash Money staffers call “C4″ because it’ll be the bomb), shooting videos with his Young Money protégés, spending time with his growing family, and deliberately not asking anyone for advice about life on the inside. “This is Lil Wayne going to jail. Nobody I can talk to can tell me what that’s like,” he says. “I just say I’m looking forward to it.”

Jill Scott sued by record label

February 4, 2010

Jill Scott’s former label Hidden Beach are claiming that the artist still owes them three albums and have now filed a lawsuit demanding Jill honour her contract. (Am I the only one who didn’t realise that she has actually left her label?)

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:

R&B superstar Jill Scott was sued this morning by her longtime record label, which is accusing the multi-platinum songstress of skipping out halfway through a six-album contract and potentially owing millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by L.A.-based Hidden Beach Records, claims that the label and its founder, Steve McKeever, helped launch Scott’s career and nurtured her into a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter but was unceremoniously dumped in October after a 10-plus year relationship.

“Hidden Beach is shocked by her decision not only because Scott has apparently chosen to leave the Hidden Beach family,” the complaint reads, “but also because Scott is contractually required to deliver three more albums to Hidden Beach.”

The complaint alleges causes of action for breach of contract and damages owed under California’s Labor Code Sec. 2855. That statute, sometimes known as the “De Havilland Law” because it stems from actress Oliva De Havilland’s successful fight in the ’40s against long-term studio deals, provides that talent cannot be bound by personal services contracts for longer than seven years. Hidden Beach isn’t disputing that Scott’s deal violated the seven-year rule but the law carves out a requirement that certain recording artists who wish to terminate their lengthy deals must reimburse their labels in the amount the labels would have received under the terms of the contracts. Since breaking onto the scene with the double-platinum selling ”Who Is Jill Scott?” album in 2000, Scott’s studio albums (and live albums) have generated millions in revenue. So while Hidden Beach’s alleged damages are unspecified in the complaint, under California law they could total several million dollars.

The lawsuit is unusually detailed in its description of the small label’s close relationship with Scott. She clearly was the center of attention for McKeever. The complaint alleges he paid her million-dollar advances when he wasn’t required to, allowed her to keep merchandising revenue, paid $450,000 to fund a concert DVD that Scott later asked not be released, bought her lavish gifts and indulged her desire to slow her recording schedule to pursue an acting career (Scott has appeared in the films “Houndog,” “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?” and HBO’s “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”).

“Hidden Beach feels that Jill Scott is an incredibly talented artist,” the company’s lawyer Lawrence Hinkle told us. ”No one regrets that this lawsuit had to be filed more than Hidden Beach, but its hands were tied and it had no other option.”

What’s on Sade’s iPod?

February 3, 2010

I think nearly all of us grew up listening to Sade’s music courtesy of our parents so it’s cool to know that she still has her finger on the pulse even at 51 and is feeling a lot of the Soul influenced music that’s out now.

The singer appeared on the Tom Joyner Morning Show on monday sharing her musical preferences.

“Obviously I listen to all the young girls out there, I’ve got a family who brings music into the house as well. I love Alicia Keys and I like some of the tracks off Rihanna’s new album [Rated R].”

Aside from R&B Sade also declared her love of Hip-Hop

“I like songs with sort of more heavy rap. I like Raekwon’s album [Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II], you know from the Wu-Tang Clan. I listen to just about anything that speaks to me and anything that’s sort of got a bit of soul and a bit of real feeling in it.”

Soldier of Love is out in all stores next week.

Diddy in Vogue magazine

January 25, 2010

The brief for Diddy’s Vogue shoot reads;

In “Brief Encounter”, supermodel Natalia Vodianova is paired up with music mogul, Sean Diddy Combs, for a whirlwind train station romance. Diddy and Natalia transport back to the golden age of train travel, when taking a trip meant glamorous outfits, bunking in sleep compartments, and goodbye kisses at the station.

In other words the title of his forthcoming album, Last Train To Paris. How clever.

SWV; definately sista’s with voices

January 25, 2010

Damn! I have no idea where these girls have been hiding but where ever it is they definately took their voices with them. This trio was probably my favourite girl group back in the day, someone get them in the studio again.

Here they are doing an acapella rendition of their classic song ‘Weak‘ for a celeb photographer in Atlanta.

Melanie Fiona – Redemption Song (for Haiti)

January 25, 2010

Thank the Lord that Melanie decided to do her own cover version of this track because quite frankly Rihanna’s is so awful that even though it’s for a great cause I couldn’t bare to blog it. (Playing with Bob Marley’s music is like playing with my emotions – don’t do it!)

Drake – cover face of Feb/March issue of Complex magazine

January 25, 2010

In this interview with Complex magazine Drake speaks about his position in the industry, the direction he is going with his forthcoming album Thank Me Later (and it’s influences) as well as being a part of Young Money/Cash Money.

Drake on his writing process

“With R&B, I know my sound. I know I make records to fuck to.

The way Jay and Wayne write rap, I write R&B. I don’t write lyrics down on paper. The other day, I was in the studio with Alicia Keys, and I wrote two songs just speaking to her. I wish I could write that way for rap. With my rap songs, there’s so much of me I have to give that I don’t know if I could ever just flow. The thing is, I’m a great rapper. There’s two elements to rap: having the thoughts, and then being a great rapper. I can really rap the shit that I write. My tone, my inflection. When I listen to myself on records, I don’t feel like I don’t belong there. When I listen to “Forever,” with three of my heroes, I fit right in.”

Banksy documentary: “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (trailer)

January 22, 2010

Banksy has got to be my favourite street graffiti artist. Period. I’ve been following his work for ages now so I’m uber excited to see that there is a documentary about him coming out fairly soon. Confusingly though it has been filmed and directed by a rival street artist (some would say Stan due to his style of work being remarkably similar), Mr BrainWash.

There are even rumours that Banksy’s identity will finally be revealed, but due to his notoriety I highly doubt it.

Here’s the indepth info courtesy of Slash Film:

British street artist Banksy has been creating attention-getting stenciled grafitti for years. Over the past decade, as his artistic profile has risen, Banksy’s identity has remained almost totally secret. And yet, here he is with a film in the Sundance Film Festival. Exit Through the Gift Shop is…well, we’re not yet sure exactly what it is. Billed as a ‘pseudo-documentary’ and described by Banksy as “The story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed,” the film might show Banksy at work and reveal something about the artist. Then again, it might not.

Rhys Ifans narrates the film, which was directed (according to a statement from the filmmakers) by Terry Guetta, who “set out to record this secretive world in thrilling detail. For more than eight years he traveled with a backpack through Europe and America. After he met a British street artist known only as Banksy, things took a bizarre turn.”

The release spells the director’s name “Terry”, but Thierry Guetta is also a street artist, aka Mr. Brainwash, whose work is very reminiscent of Banksy’s. Hopefully the film will shed some light on both artists.

Sundance director John Cooper gushes about the movie, which was one of the secret programming surprises until word began to leak out this week. (Based, in part, on the fact that new Banksy artwork, like the piece in the header above, was seen in Park City.)

T-Wayne – Dread Heads (mixtape)

January 22, 2010

As we all know in summer of ‘08 T-Pain and Lil Wayne announced that they had formed a duo (T-Wayne), and that they had plans to release an album together. Now no one has any idea when this album will eventually surface but sometime last year T-Pain let slip that they were already 12 tracks into the production process. The last few weeks has seen a couple of T-Wayne leaks so my guess is it’s only a matter of time before we see the fruits of that labour – (I’m thinking sometime after Weezy releases Rebirth).

Jay-Z – cover face of February’s Interview magazine

January 20, 2010

Here’s a snippet from the article:

MITCHELL: What’s it like when you talk to Kanye West now? How are things different between you guys from what they were like when you first spotted him and he was producing for you?

JAY-Z: Well, he’s really more of a peer now. You know, before, he was more a new guy trying to get on—a fan of the music that I’ve made and my lifestyle—so things were a little different. But he’s an extraordinary person. He has these ideas and these things that he wants to do and places he wants to go, and he’s really passionate about them. He’s very sincere.

MITCHELL: Sometimes his passions ruin him.

JAY-Z: Yeah, which is great. I like that, man! I really do. I mean, no one’s walking around here perfect. Everyone’s gonna make mistakes. That’s part of how you learn. I think Kanye . . . Well, I know he said what he believed. He was telling the truth.

MITCHELL: To which event are you referring?

JAY-Z: I’m talking about the Taylor Swift thing. I just think the timing of what he did was wrong, and that, of course, overshadowed everything. He believed that “Single Ladies” [by Jay-Z’s wife, Beyoncé] was a better video. I believed that. I think a lot of people believed that. You can’t give someone Video of the Year if they don’t win Best Female Video. I thought Best Female Video was something you won on the way to Video of the Year. But, hey, I guess it wasn’t—and that’s a whole other conversation about awards shows and artists.

MITCHELL: You seem to stay away from that awards show stuff for the most part.

JAY-Z: Yeah, because it ain’t about nothing. It’s cool. It’s acknowledgment. The fans get to see you, and you can do great by your record if you have a great performance or a great night there. That’s all part of the business. But at their core, awards shows are not really a sincere thing. You know, for a lot of years, the artists had to pay to play their own set.

MITCHELL: No kidding!

JAY-Z: Yes. That was the worst scam ever. I couldn’t even believe it. I mean, just now they’re starting to pay for half the sets and some awards shows pay for the whole thing. But this is just happening now—and it’s only because the record companies ran out of money.

MITCHELL: You’ve always had interesting takes on awards shows. I remember back in the day, you talked about the Grammys and said, “Well, they don’t take rap seriously, so why should I go? They don’t know what we do—and they don’t care about what we do.”

JAY-Z: It’s just honest, man—they really didn’t. I’ve always seen awards shows for what they are. For the awards show people, it’s about sponsorships—it’s not about recognizing anyone’s art, because if you get into the business of recognizing art, then you have to get it right all the time. You have to get it right. You can’t have the woman who wins Video of the Year not win Best Female Video. I mean, Herbie Hancock is great, but you can’t have him beat the Kanye album that year. I mean, come on, seriously. That can’t happen. That just lets me know that the people who get to pick these ballots just check the only name they know. I think that’s what’s happening with rap music now.

MITCHELL: Yeah?

JAY-Z: I think it’s a bunch of people who don’t know anything about rap, and have probably never even heard a Kanye West album, are doing the nominating, and they say, “Kanye West. I know that name. That’s the guy who made the comments about the president that time! He’s nominated!” That’s how the process works, and I think that’s part of Kanye’s frustration. Me, I look at it for what it is. But Kanye is so passionate about it. I mean, the guy shot three “Jesus Walks” videos. Three. Two of them he shot with his own money just so he could get it right. He really cares about it. And then, back to the original point, his passion kicks in and he takes things too far . . . He doesn’t realize that that girl, Taylor Swift, is just like him. That was her moment. It wasn’t her fault. She didn’t do anything. It’s not her awards show. So he just did the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time.

MITCHELL: Did he call you that night? Did you guys talk about what happened right away?

JAY-Z: We actually had to fly out because we were doing Leno the next day, and he called and said he wasn’t getting on the plane. I knew he didn’t want to have the conversation yet. It’s more of a big brother relationship with me and him. But he came the next day, and we spoke in the dressing room. We had a nice, long talk. I think he did the right thing to face it and just move on. I say this all the time, but I think, at the end of the day, we’re gonna celebrate him for his passion more than vilify him.
